Description

The ramp barn and byres adjacent to Lytheside East Farmhouse are two separate structures, likely built in the mid-18th century and later extended to connect with the farmhouse in the late 18th century. They feature coursed, squared rubble with quoins and have a graduated slate roof. The buildings are two storeys high and consist of nine bays in total. The original four-bay barn on the right projects at both the front and rear beyond the extension.

There is a window inserted in a partially blocked cart entrance under a slate canopy, with a single window to the right and two to the left. The extension has a plank cart entrance under a slate canopy, flanked by plank byre doors on either side. On the first floor, there is a window in the original barn, a plank loft door, and dovecote openings in the extension, along with vent slits. A ramp wagon entrance is located at the rear of the original barn. Inside the original barn, there are three king-post trusses, while the extension has five queen-strut trusses. Lean-to outbuildings attached to the south return and rear are not of interest.
