Description
Marshman's Cottage, built around 1800 to serve Black Mill, is a single-storey structure made of red brick laid in Flemish bond, topped with a pantiled roof. The facade faces north-west and features a two-window range, with a two-light casement on either side of a central plank door, all set under gauged skewback arches. The eaves have a dentil cornice, and the roof is hipped.
At the rear, there is a contemporary full-length outshut that is lit by two 20th-century two-light casements, separated by a plank door. This elevation also has a dentil eaves cornice and a rebuilt stack on the wall plane of the main building. There is an additional two-light casement on the south-west return and another on the outshut return.
The attached outbuildings are constructed of random flint with brick dressings and also have a pantiled roof. They are single-storey with four main compartments, each featuring a plank door. The two doors at the south-east end are of the split stable type, leading into former horse stalls. There is a toilet outshut at the south-east end with a plank door, and the outbuildings also have a dentil eaves cornice.
The garden wall is made of red brick in Flemish bond, topped with bull-nosed brick coping, and includes a break for a central wooden gate.
