Description

A mid-18th century mill and millhouse, with an attached outbuilding. The building is constructed of grey brick in a header bond pattern, with red brick dressings, except for a brick half-bay added to the right in the late 18th century. It has a gabled roof covered in old tiles, with brick stacks at the right end and rear. The original plan comprised two units. The front facade is symmetrical, featuring a two-window range. A segmental arch frames the C19 panelled door within a moulded wooden architrave. There are two-light casement windows, with one window blind above the door. A red brick storey band and dentilled eaves run along the top. A two-storey rear range was added around 1840, built of brick with a Welsh slate roof. To the left of the mill stands a two-storey mill with banded red and flared brickwork, a rear wall of chalk rubble, and a gambrel roof of old tiles. Segmental arches frame a C19 panelled door in the right bay. Above, there are two tall glazed windows, and a blocked mill race. A two-bay cartshed is situated to the left, constructed of weatherboarding, and has a half-hipped roof of old tiles, braced posts, and a collar truss with clasped purlins. The interior has not been inspected. Historically, the mill ground corn for the manorial estate, and its operation dates back to the medieval period.
