Description
Thurne War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with additions for the Second World War. It is made of grey granite and is located in the churchyard of the Church of St Edmund on Church Road in Thurne, Norfolk. The memorial is prominently positioned in the south-east corner of the churchyard, facing the road, and is visible through a gap in the churchyard wall. It features a rough-hewn wheel-head cross on a plinth with a two-stepped base. The plinth displays the inscription for the First World War, while a separate granite slab at the foot of the cross contains the Second World War inscriptions. The inscription reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND/ IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THESE/ PARISHES WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR US IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918/ (NAMES)/ 1939 – 45/ (NAMES)."
