Description
Thurne Dyke Windpump is a drainage windpump built in 1820 and restored in 1955 by R.D. Morse, again in 1962 by Thomas Smithdale and Son, and in 1975 by the Norfolk Windmills Trust. It features whitewashed brick and a timber weatherboarded cap. The structure has a two-storey tapering circular tower that was raised to three storeys in the mid-19th century. There are segmental-headed doors on the east and west sides, and two casements on the south side. The boat-shaped cap includes a petticoat, fan cradle, and fan stage, with an 8-vaned fantail over the gallery. The windpump is equipped with a striking chain wheel, worm drive, and a shortened tail pole. It has stocks and sails, but no shutters or spider. The internal machinery is intact, including the windshaft, brakewheel, wallower, upright shaft, crown wheel, pit wheel, and drive shaft leading to an external turbine enclosed in an iron casing.
