UPTON WITH FISHLEY Engine House immediately south-east of Black Mill

Engine house. c1840. Red brick laid in Flemish bond; hipped slate roof. EXTERIOR: One storey; square plan, with small outshut to north and west under corrugated iron roofs. North elevation with gabled outshut with double timber doors to left of doorway under gauged skewback arch. West elevation with vertical weatherboarding to outshut (which protects differential gearing of turbine). Ghost of very large scoopwheel against mainwall driven by original steam engine. South elevation with one 6/6 unhorned sash under gauged skewback arch to left and an inserted plank door to right. East elevation with 2 6/6 unhorned sashes under gauged skewback arches to left and one blocked doorway to right. INTERIOR: 2 rooms of unequal size. Boarded ceiling. West room with diesel engine of c.1930 by Ruston of Lincoln (Hornsby & Ruston), with flywheel set within intact protective timber cage. East room with 2 cylindrical fuel tanks and iron water tank in roof space supported on paired joists.
