Description
Shouldham Thorpe War Memorial is a First World War memorial, erected around 1920, with additions for the Second World War. It is made of grey granite and is located in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary the Virgin on Church Lane in Shouldham Thorpe, Norfolk. The memorial is prominently situated to the west of the church, near the church door.
The structure features a rough-hewn wheel-head cross mounted on a plinth with a single-stepped base. The plinth has a smoothed face that displays the First World War inscriptions in leaded lettering. The Second World War inscriptions are on a small metal plaque attached to the lower shaft of the cross.
The inscription on the plinth reads: "IN MEMORY OF THE MEN/ OF THIS VILLAGE WHO DIED/ FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE/ GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918/ (NAMES)." The plaque for the Second World War states: "IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS VILLAGE/ WHO DIED IN THE WAR 1939 – 1945/ (NAMES)."
