Description
Lopen Mill House is a detached house, possibly incorporating former mill buildings, dating from around 1800. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond on a stone plinth, with Ham stone dressings. The roof features a combination of plain clay tiles over stone slate base courses between stepped coped gables and double Roman clay tiles, along with brick chimney stacks.
The house is two storeys high and has three bays, with the third bay being taller and featuring coped gables and chimneys. The first two bays have beaded mullioned windows in recessed architraves, with 2- and 3-light configurations below, and similar small-pane casement windows above. Between these bays is a 20th-century door and porch. The third bay has wide casement windows in stone architraves at both levels, which may have originally been double sash windows, and to the left is a 20th-century door set in a stone architrave with a flat stone hood on console brackets. The rear elevation is similar, featuring a semi-circular arched window for the stairwell.
An extension from the north-west corner westward is a two-storey stone building with a slate roof, which has been much altered and is not of special interest. The mill was first recorded around 1285 and functioned as a water/grist mill until the mid-18th century. After that, it operated as both a grain mill and a linen establishment, and part of the house may date from this transition, although all other mill buildings have since been demolished.
