Description
Church Farmhouse is a detached house dating from the 17th century, with modifications made in the 18th and 19th centuries. The end of the north wing was converted into a Sunday School during the 1880s. The building is constructed of ham stone rubble with ashlar dressings, while the south elevation is rendered and colourwashed. It features a thatched roof with a plain north gable and stepped coped gables on the south crosswing, along with brick chimney stacks.
The house has a 'T'-plan and is two storeys high, with a south elevation comprising three bays. It has sash windows with 20 panes in plain openings. The lower centre bay contains a five-fielded-panel door set in a semi-circular arched recess, topped by a plain fanlight. The north wing, which is integral to the house, has two bays with three-light horizontal-bar casement windows and a 20th-century door in a recess on the lower bay of the west side; the east side is plain.
The Sunday School room features a gabled porch on the west side, with a Welsh slate roof, a four-centred outer arch, and a plain boarded inner door. To the north of the porch, there is a blocked stairlight and traces of other blocked openings, along with two 20th-century metal windows in each wall. The north gable includes a 19th-century two-light traceried window in a 14th-century style without a label. The interiors have not been seen.
Approximately 2 metres south of the crosswing, there is a low stone ashlar wall topped with wrought-iron railings featuring alternate arrowheads and hoops, and cast-iron urn finials on arch-braced standards. A 20th-century wrought-iron gate is positioned opposite the doorway. This boundary walling and railings contribute to the overall setting of the house.
