Description

Knapp Cottage is a detached house built between 1822 and 1833. It is constructed of ham stone, rendered with ashlar lining and features ashlar dressings. The rear extension is made of local stone that is roughly cut and squared. The roof is covered with Welsh slate and features coped gables, with a parapet on the south elevation and brick chimney stacks. The building has an 'L' plan, is two storeys high, and has a three-bay south elevation. It includes a plinth, cornice, a plain parapet with moulded coving, and rusticated quoins. The south elevation features 16-pane sash windows in plain openings. The lower bay has a fully glazed door set in a semi-circular arched opening with a radial-glazed fanlight, which is protected by an open stone porch supported by Tuscan columns and pilasters, topped with a plain entablature and flat roof.

On the east gable, there is an attached greenhouse/conservatory. The west gable has pairs of sash windows, with 16-and 12-pane windows below and 16-and 8-pane windows above. North of this gable is an extension wing, likely built slightly later, which has three bays with matching sash windows. In the lower bay closest to the main block, there is a doorway with a 6-panelled door set in a deep recess, framed by an architrave and topped with a pedimented hood on console brackets. The interior has not been seen.
