Description

A detached farmhouse, likely dating from the 18th century and modified in the 19th century, stands on the south side of Church Street in Lopen. The main farmhouse is constructed of finely dressed ham stone ashlar, with a Welsh slate roof of a shallow pitch, punctuated by stepped coped gables. Brick chimney stacks are also present. The house is two storeys high and comprises five bays. It has margined sash windows set in plain openings, with etched glass in the margins. A later 19th-century two-panelled door, with a margined rectangular fanlight above, is situated in the lower bay, and is sheltered by an open stone porch featuring Tuscan columns and pilasters, and a plain entablature.

Attached to the east gable is a former farm building made of coursed rubble stonework, covered with a thatched roof. It incorporates a throughway at the east end and a blocked waggon doorway in the north wall. The building retains a double collar-trussed roof, with an inserted floor and remnants of wattle and daub partitioning. A later 19th-century single-storey brick building is attached to the rear of the main house. The interior was not inspected during the listing process.

Approximately 2 metres north of the farmhouse, a low ashlar stone well is capped with cast iron railings featuring decorative spear-point tops. A pair of matching gates flank the doorway, all contributing to the visual appeal of the house and the streetscape. Historically, the property was the largest farmstead in Lopen throughout the 19th century, but was divided in 1918.
