Description
This is a detached farmhouse, originally built in the 17th century and likely modified in the 18th century. It is constructed from ham stone, some of which is ashlar, with thatched roofs behind stepped coped gables, and brick chimney stacks. The house is two storeys high and has four bays, with the first bay set on a lower level. Bays 3 and 4 are ashlar faced. The windows are hollow-chamfered mullioned, with 3-, 4-, 2- and 3-lights on the ground floor, set within chamfered recesses. The ground floor window in the first bay has a separate label, while the remaining windows share a stepped label that rises over the arched doorway to the right of the first bay, and the window in the fourth bay. Above, there are plain casement windows – 3-light, except for the second bay, which has 4 lights. The window in the first bay reaches the eaves, and the other ground floor windows have exposed timber lintels. A small double stairlight, or lamplight, is located to the left of the lower first bay. Above the third bay is a Sun Insurance plate. The north gable is plain, and a 2-light mullioned window is in the south gable at first floor level. There is a later extension to the southwest corner. The interior, reportedly, has a cross-passage plan with four rooms in a line; the room in the first bay was the kitchen, featuring a wide fireplace, oven, and traces of a staircase to a lower room above. On the first floor of the main block, there are 'in-and-out' timber board partitions. Approximately 3 metres east of the house is a rubble wall with thin angled coping, about one metre high, which curves slightly upwards to a gateway opposite the front door, and returns to the corners of the house. This wall enhances the setting of the house and the streetscape.
