Description

The Wilderness is a detached cottage dating back to the 17th century with later additions. It is constructed of ham stone rubble with ashlar dressings, and has a thatched roof with a plain east gable and a stepped coped gable to the west. A brick chimney stack is also present. The cottage is two storeys high and has three bays. It features hollow-chamfered mullioned windows set in chamfered recesses. The lower bay has a three-light mullioned window, while the second lower bay has a two-light mullioned window. The third lower bay has a two-light window. The upper bay three has a three-light rectangular-leaded casement window of 18th-century design. A blocked doorway is located between bays one and two, and bay three is set slightly higher, possibly representing an 18th-century addition. The east gable has two three-light mullioned windows, with a lower window having a label. The rear outshut features a two-light mullioned window without a label, and a cambered-arched doorway leads to a single-storey extension, seemingly relocated. The interior reportedly contains narrow-chamfered beams with step and runout stops, a collar trussed roof, a timber-framed partition, a timber-framed firehood with a partly timber-framed fireplace, and an unusual carved corbel or post head on the ground floor of the west section.
