Description

Greatham Millhouse is a house with an attached mill at the north end and a barn, which serves as a garage and store, at the other end. It dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century. The building features brick walls in Flemish bond, with blue headers on the mill section, while the barn has walls made of brickwork, ironstone, and boarding. The roof is hipped and tiled, with brick dentil eaves on the house, which has four gables at the rear. The mill has a slate roof with a double pile design, and the barn has a separate hipped tile roof that extends to lower eaves on the south and west sides.

The house and mill present a continuous front elevation facing southeast, consisting of two storeys, plus an attic, and four windows. The mill has coupled gables that are wider and taller. The house features a plain doorway from the early 19th century, complete with a moulded canopy supported by small carved brackets and a six-panelled door, two of which are glazed. The mill front includes upper and lower doors, as well as a wide cambered arch in the northern half that leads to the wheel housing. The lower walls of the mill are constructed of ironstone, where they meet the embankment.

The barn is a timber-frame structure with three bays and two aisles, set back and touching the house at its southwest corner. The rear elevation of the house shows evidence in the brickwork that the roof was originally a catslide but was later raised to form the current gables. A notable feature of the mill is the retention of its interior, which still contains machinery, although it is now unusable due to the diversion of the water supply.
