Description
This milestone, located on the south side of the B2070 London Road, just east of the entrance to Sussex Gate, dates from around 1820. It is part of a series of milestones along the London to Portsmouth road (A3). The stone pillar has a square section and is placed diagonally. The upper part of the front features a carved quadrant sloping panel, above a small triangular sloping panel. The rounded front originally had the inscription "HYDE PARK CORNER," but "LONDON" has since been painted over. The triangular panel displays the figure 49, indicating the distance to London. The eastern lower panel is inscribed with "PETERSFIELD 3," and the western panel reads "LIPHOOK 7." This milestone is one of several that have survived from around 1820 along the A3.
