Description
This milestone, located on the east side of the A30 London Road in Bagshot, was erected by the Bedfont and Bagshot Turnpike Trust in 1743 and carved by the mason Stephen Hart from Chertsey. Made of limestone, the milestone features a square-section shaft with a rounded, pyramidal cap. It is slightly set back from the pavement in a gravel area. The front, or west face, has a central horizontal cut, with the upper half set back slightly. This face is inscribed in black paint with the lettering: 26 MILES/ FROM/ HYDE PARK/ CORNER. Additionally, the angled west face includes an Ordnance Survey benchmark and rivet, also painted black, which were likely added in the 19th century.
