Description
The Church of St Anne is a church built in 1884 by Alec Cheer. It is constructed from polychrome brick with stone dressings and features slate roofs with tiled ridges. The church has a cruciform plan, with lower aisles beneath pentice roofs, transepts, and a chancel to the east. An attached tower is located at the northeast angle of the south transept, with a vestry to the north.
The tower is two stages high, topped with an octagonal belfry and a stone needle spire that has triangular openings. The tower is buttressed at the lower stage and has octagonal angle turrets at the upper stage, which are adorned with decorative stone banding. A stone clock face is positioned above a tall arched louvred window on the south face, set on a cill band. The church features lancet windows in the aisles and two-light clerestory windows above. The transept and the east and west windows are designed in the Decorated style, showcasing intricate stone tracery.
There are gabled porches at the north and south ends of the west front, with the north porch currently blocked. The south porch has a stone hood moulding and contains planked double doors. Inside, the church has standard fittings. Its elevated position allows it to stand out prominently on the skyline.
