Description
This milestone, erected by the Bedfont and Bagshot Turnpike Trust in 1743, was carved by the Chertsey mason Stephen Hart. It is made of limestone and is located on the south-east side of the A30 London Road, on a grass verge outside No 204 London Road. The milestone features a square-section shaft of worked stone topped with a rounded, pyramidal cap. The front face, which faces north-west, has a central horizontal cut, with the upper half set back slightly. It is inscribed in painted black lettering that reads: 27 MILES/ FROM/ HYDE PARK/ CORNER. The rear face, facing south-east, includes an Ordnance Survey benchmark, also painted black, which was likely added in the 19th century.
