Description
This is a house built in 1905 by the Camberley architect H R Poulter for Edwyn Close, a local solicitor. It is an example of the Arts and Crafts style. The house is timber-framed, with patterns of vertical timbers in the lower part and curved braces with decorative plastered infill above, set upon a brick plinth. It has a tiled roof and diagonally set brick chimneystacks. The windows are wooden casements with small square leaded panes, some featuring attractive Art Nouveau style flowing leaf patterns in green glass. The building has an L-shaped plan, with a separate servants’ wing and domestic offices to the north.
The front elevation features a half-hexagonal central tower with a pyramidal roof and continuous glazing to the first floor. A ribbed oak door is set into the ground floor level. To the left is a five-light canted bay window to the first floor and a three-light window to the ground floor. To the right is a smaller casement window on each floor. The east elevation has a hipped roof and jetty, with a four-light casement to the first floor and a five-light canted bay to the ground floor. A brick chimneystack with a steeply hipped roof is attached to the north return. The south or garden front is designed to evoke a Wealden house style, with hipped roofs and timber-framed end bays featuring a jetty to the western bay. The recessed central section is of brick. This elevation has four bays, with three-light casements to the first floor, and four-light mullioned and transomed casements to the ground floor end bays. A square brick bay is located centrally, currently obscured by a wooden trellis structure and a large conservatory. The conservatory, thought to be Victorian and brought from elsewhere in the Surrey Heath District, has been added to the rear.
Inside, original features remain, including exposed oak ceiling beams, a fine oak staircase to the hexagonal tower, fireplaces, and most of the original oak doors on the ground floor. The conservatory has ornate metalwork. An original architect's drawing and plan of Woodcote survives in the Surrey Heath Museum.
