Description
The Camberley Memorial Cross is a war memorial that was erected in 1922. It is located within a paved area that is enclosed by low walls, positioned south of and aligned with the 19th-century lodge to the Royal Military Academy designed by James Wyatt.
The monument features a large, rock-hewn Latin cross made of granite, which is mounted on a square stone base that rests on a plinth. This plinth is accessible by three steps on each side. At each corner of the base, there are low piers with two diminishing stages, which may have been added later.
The Latin cross has a tapered shaft and includes an additional incised cross at its head on the southern side. The southern face of the base is inscribed in relief with the words ‘THE / GREAT WAR / 1914-1919’, while the northern face bears the inscription ‘TO OUR / GLORIOUS / DEAD’. An added granite plaque on the southern face of the cross base reads ‘WORLD / WAR / 1939 – 1945’.
The names of those who died in the First World War are inscribed in two columns on each face of the main cross base. The names of those who died in the Second World War are inscribed on the four smaller piers at the corners of the plinth.
