Description

This milestone, dated 1743, is located on London Road in Ashford. It stands about 600 millimeters high and 400 millimeters square, featuring a slightly domed top. The inscription on the side facing the road reads "XV miles from Hyde Park Corner 1743." This milestone is the only one remaining of two that were originally along London Road. Although it has been moved slightly northward due to the widening of the road in 1980, it remains close to its original position. This milestone is an intact example from the early 18th century. Historically, it is part of a sequence of similar milestones that were placed along the London-Staines Road, which is one of the main old routes into London and part of the Roman road to Silchester.
