Description
The Welsh School, built in 1857 and designed by architect Henry Clutton, is a Gothic-style building with some inspiration from Ruskin. It features a main block that is two and a half storeys high, constructed from ragstone with Bath stone dressings and quoins. The building has a plinth, a cill band at the first floor, a cornice above the first floor, and steep gabled coping on the dormers. The roof is slate, and there are two front chimneys with shaped stone stacks.
The central section has a cross gabled clock and belfry, with ten bays in the centre that include gabled 2-light dormers and triple cusped lancets below. The three central bays have distinctive Gothic glazing and a parapetted square oriel bay on the first floor. Flanking the central section are lower gabled breaks with stepped windows at the gable ends and four dormers on the returns; the west return features a pointed relieving arch on the first floor above three windows with shaped upper corners.
The main block has a central moulded arch doorway with nook shafts and a tympanum displaying the Prince of Wales' Feathers. This doorway is flanked by smaller windows with crocketted pinnacle shafts. At the rear, there are lower service ranges and two courtyards. A later gym block to the west is not of special interest.
