Description

The Ashford War Memorial is a significant structure commemorating those who served in World War I and World War II, with the designer unknown. It is made from Portland stone and features a three-step base topped by a plinth that supports a square tapering shaft, on which a winged figure of Victory stands.

The shaft is inscribed on all four sides. One side displays the dates 1914-1919, while the other three sides list the names of 219 fallen individuals, specifically commemorating the Old Scholars of the West London District School. The north face of the plinth features a bold relief carving of a sword piercing an upturned garland. Surrounding the base are inscriptions that read, "Their name liveth for evermore" (Ecclesiasticus 44:14) and "The men were very good unto us and we were not hurt. They were a wall unto us both night and day" (1 Samuel 25:15-17). Additionally, three small square stone plant holders on the top step are inscribed with the names "Ypres," "Zeebrugge," and "Mons."

Approximately 2 meters to the north of the main memorial is a simple tablet shaped like an open book, inscribed with "To all those who gave their lives 1939 1945" on one side and "We will remember them" along with 59 names on the reverse. This tablet stands on a square base, in front of which is another small square plant holder.

The Ashford War Memorial holds strong historical and cultural significance both locally and nationally. It is a striking feature at a road junction in Ashford and is notable for having a freestanding World War II memorial as part of its design.
