Description

The Staines War Memorial is made of Portland stone and is situated in Market Square. It features a carved winged figure of Victory, who holds a torch and a laurel wreath, positioned on an ornate pedestal. This pedestal has cornices at both the top and base, and is decorated with carved scrolled ornament and other motifs. The memorial stands on a square double plinth, which has projecting spurs at each corner, each featuring a figure of a serviceman. The figures represent a soldier in field kit with a rifle, a sailor in day rig with signal flags, an airman in flying rig, and a marine in field kit with a rifle.

The front face of the plinth displays an inscription in black lettering that reads: "TO OUR GLORIOUS DEAD 1914 – 1918 THIS WAR MEMORIAL IS ERECTED BY THE PEOPLE OF STAINES IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL HOMAGE TO THEIR FELLOW TOWNSMEN WHO ENDURED ALL AND GAVE ALL THAT HONOUR AND FREEDOM MIGHT PREVAIL THEY SHALL GROW NOT OLD AS WE THAT ARE LEFT GROW OLD AGE SHALL NOT WEARY THEM NOR THE YEARS CONDEMN AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN AND IN THE MORNING WE WILL REMEMBER THEM." The other faces of the plinth list the names of those who fell.

On the lower plinth, there is an inscription that reads: "1939 1945 IN MEMORIAM TO ALL THOSE KILLED AT HOME AND ABROAD THROUGH ENEMY ACTION THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE." Below this, an inclined tablet lists the names of those who fell in the Second World War.

The entire structure is set upon an octagonal two-stepped base.
