Description

The Blue Anchor Public House is an early to mid 18th century building located in Market Square, Staines. This notable town house features a chequered brick front with seven narrow bays, where the central three bays are slightly set forward. The building stands three storeys high with an attic, and has band courses above the ground and first floors, as well as a modillion eaves cornice. The hipped tile roof is adorned with three dormers that have glazing bar sashes. The lower windows are flush frame glazing bar sashes with brick flat arches.

The public house front, added in the mid 19th century, is a seven bay design made of wood, featuring pilasters and a slightly coved fascia that supports a cast-iron balcony. The outer windows and one window to the left of the center are bracketted bays, and there are transom lights above the central angled three-window bay. A gabled timber-frame wing extends to the north-east.

Inside, the first floor retains significant early to mid 18th century panelling and fittings, including period fireplaces with bolection surrounds, one of which is enriched and has an over-mantle in a corner position. There is also a display cupboard. The north-east staircase is likely early 18th century, featuring a moulded straight string, twisted balusters, a wide rail, and dado. The south-east staircase may also be original.
