Description
The New Marston War Memorial is located prominently on the east side of Marston Road, next to St Michael’s Primary School. Made of Portland stone, it stands 2.75 metres tall, appearing higher due to its raised platform. The memorial features a plain short cross mounted on a two-stepped plinth, which is set atop a large column. Each side of the column has a stone-sculpted arch that projects outward, and within the recess of the front arch is a stone wreath carved in relief.
The gently tapered column rests on a chamfered plinth, which is supported by a larger two-stepped base. The entire structure is elevated on a platform made of red tiles, accessible from the pavement by two sets of three steps, flanked by a wall of rough stone blocks.
The front (west-facing) side of the column lists the names, ranks, and regiments of 26 men from New Marston who died in the First World War, inscribed into the stone. The plinth on this side bears the inscription: "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE / THIS MEMORIAL IS ERECTED BY THEIR FRIENDS / OF NEW MARSTON."
On the left (north-facing) side, the column is inscribed with: "IN GRATEFUL / REMEMBRANCE / OF THE MEN / FROM THIS VILLAGE / WHO LAID DOWN / THEIR LIVES / IN THE GREAT WARS / 1914–1919." After the Second World War, the letter S was added to the word WAR, and the text "AND / 1939–1945" was inscribed below it, followed by eleven names. A twelfth name was added to the chamfered edge of the plinth.
The right (south-facing) side of the column features the inscription: "GREATER LOVE / HATH NO / MAN THAN THIS / THAT A MAN / LAY DOWN / HIS LIFE FOR HIS / FRIENDS."
