Description
The Chewton Mendip War Memorial is a Grade II listed structure made entirely of Portland stone. It features an octagonal plinth with four octagonal steps. The memorial itself is designed as a cross, with octagonal terminals at the ends of the arms, set on a tapering chamfered shaft that has a chamfered and moulded socket.
On the east side of the plinth, three faces are inscribed with the words: 'TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF / THE OFFICERS AND MEN FROM THIS PARISH / WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-19.' Below this inscription are the names and details of those who fell, which continue onto the steps beneath the plinth. The lower step also bears the inscription: “THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE,” alongside the names of those who lost their lives in the First World War.
The north-west and north-east faces of the plinth are inscribed with: 'ALSO OF THE FOLLOWING / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE / SECOND WORLD WAR 1939-1945;' below which are the names and details of two men who died in the Second World War.
