Description
The Parish Church of St Matthew, built between 1856 and 1858 with a tower added in 1865, is designed in the Decorated Gothic style by architect William Butterfield. It is constructed from ragstone with Bath stone dressings and bands, featuring tiled roofs. The church includes an aisled nave, chancel, and south chapel, along with a south-west tower and porch topped with a pyramidal roof. The tower is characterized by clasping buttresses, lancet bell openings, and a pyramidal roof. The aisles have cusped lancets, and there are two-light decorated clerestory windows and a three-light east window, as well as a fanlight in the east window. The porch features a depressed segmental head beneath a tympanum with a pointed head. Inside, there is a five-bay arcade supported by octagonal piers and a chancel arch on octagonal responds, with a plain chamfered treatment. Notable interior features include a rood screen, a brass memorial to Edward Wooden and his wife from 1525, and a coffin plate for the Earl of Kinnoul, who died in 1758. Additionally, there is a 20th-century five-bay vestry to the north-east, built at right angles and in a similar style.
