Description
The Presbytery of the Roman Catholic Church of St Peter is a building constructed between 1861 and 1866, with later additions and alterations, designed by architect Henry Clutton. It is built from red brick with ashlar dressings and features a plain-tile roof, showcasing details in the French Gothic style. The building has a lobby-entry plan.
The exterior consists of two storeys with four irregularly spaced first-floor windows and a single-storey range to the left. The off-centre entrance is approached by four steps leading to an elliptically-arched opening and a barrel-vaulted recess, which contains a part-glazed, panelled door set within a chamfered Caernarvon-arched surround. The ground floor features pairs of 1/1 sash windows with a central colonnette adorned with foliate capitals and chamfered jambs. These windows are positioned between a continuous cavetto-moulded sill band and a broad band at the heads. On the first floor, there is a continuous cavetto-moulded sill band with three similar but smaller pairs of windows and a single 1/1 sash window above the door, along with a continuous eaves band at the heads of the windows. The building has a ridge, rear, and end stack, as well as raised gables.
To the left, there is a range with a 1/1 sash window in a chamfered surround and a continuous sill band. There is also a further range with a peaked roof and an external stack.
Inside, the presbytery features a dog-leg staircase with turned balusters and shutters on the windows. Historically, Dormer Place was laid out around 1822 and was originally known as The Promenade.
