Description

148 and 148A Parade is a house that has been converted into a bank and offices. It was built around 1835 and features pinkish-brown brick with a painted stucco front facade and an ashlar ground floor, topped with a Welsh slate roof. The building has four storeys and two first-floor windows.

On the first floor, there are 6/3 sash windows set in tooled surrounds, complete with a frieze and cornice. The second floor has 6/6 sash windows with moulded sills, a frieze, and a dentil cornice. The third floor features 3/3 sash windows, all with plain reveals, a frieze, cornice, and a blocking course. The ground floor includes an arcade with two arches supported by Ionic columns, a right-side entrance, and a central entrance featuring a six-panel double door with an overlight. The ground floor also has plate-glass windows with divided overlights, central stepped keystones, and horizontal rustication around the surrounds. At the rear, there are 6/6 sash windows and a staircase sash window with radial glazing at the top. The attic contains a dog-leg staircase with stick balusters.

Inside, the building retains original joinery, including shutters on some windows. Historically, the Parade was named in 1860, having previously been called Lillington Lane and later Union Row around 1809. The lower section was laid out between 1810 and 1814 and extended towards Dormer Place around 1835. Originally built as houses, hotels, and lodging-houses, many had converted to shops by 1850. The ground floor forms a continuous architectural unit with No. 150.
