Description
No. 138 Parade is a house that has been converted into a shop, built around 1810 to 1814 with later additions and alterations, including a mid to late 20th-century ground-floor shop front. The front facade is made of painted stucco and features a concealed roof. The building has four storeys and two first-floor windows. The first floor displays horizontal rustication and tall 6/6 sash windows. The second floor has 6/6 sash windows with sills, while the third floor features 3/3 sash windows with sills. All windows are set in plain reveals and have cambered heads with incised voussoirs and raised keystones. The ground floor includes a 20th-century glazed entrance within the shop front.
The interior has not been inspected. Historically, the Parade was named in 1860, having originally been called Lillington Lane. It was renamed Union Row around 1809 and then Union Parade. The lower section of the street was developed between 1810 and 1814. Initially built as houses, lodging-houses, and hotels, many of these structures had become shops by 1850. The original buildings were brick fronted. No. 138 is part of a notable group of buildings.
