Description

This group of three houses, numbered 144, 144A, and 146, forms part of Parade in Royal Leamington Spa. They were built around 1808 to 1818, with later additions and alterations including mid-to-late 20th century shop fronts at ground floor level. The houses are constructed with a stucco facade, brick stacks painted pinkish-brown and sit beneath a concealed roof.

The building is four storeys high, with four windows on the first floor, arranged in a 2:2 pattern. The first floor windows are tall sashes with six panes to each light (6/6). The second floor has a sill band and matching 6/6 sashes. The third floor windows are smaller, with three panes to each light (3/3), also with sills. All windows are set in plain reveals. The facade features a frieze, cornice and blocking course. Tall ridge and end stacks are present.

Inside number 144A, a dogleg staircase has stick balusters running from the ground to the third floor. There are four-panel doors, cast-iron and wooden fireplaces.

The Parade itself was named in 1860. Previously known as Lillington Lane, it was renamed Union Row around 1809. The lower section was laid out between 1810 and 1814, with further building extending towards Dormer Place around 1835. Originally built as houses, hotels, and lodging houses, by 1850 many had been converted into shops. The original buildings were brick-fronted.
