Description

This milestone, located on the south side of the A3 Portsmouth Road, is approximately 3/4 mile from the Hampshire/Surrey boundary. It dates from around 1820 and is part of a series of milestones along the London to Portsmouth road. The stone pillar has a square section and is positioned diagonally. The upper part of the front features a carved quadrant sloping panel, above a small triangular sloping panel. The rounded front is inscribed with "HYDE PARK CORNER," while the triangular panel displays the number 40, indicating the distance to London. The eastern lower panel is inscribed with "LIPHOOK 4," and the western panel shows "GODALMING 5." This milestone is one of the surviving examples from around 1820 along the A3.
