BRAMSHOTT AND LIPHOOK, War Memorial in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary the Virgin
19-DEC-05
II
War memorial. Dedicated in 1920. Designed by Harry Inigo Triggs and constructed by Messrs Moon of Haslemere and Messrs Caesar of Liphook, stonemasons. Doulton Stone. Tall tapering square shaft with moulded octagonal base surmounted by cross fleury. The shaft rests on a pedestal with three square projections with moulded tops and bases, on top of a circular platform of Bargate Stone. The moulded base of the shaft is inscribed with 'In hoc signo' and the inscription on the western elevation of the plinth reads: 'To the glory of God and the honoured memory of Bramshott men who gave their lives in the Great Wars 1914-1919 1939-1945 and other conflicts'. The three plinth projections carry plaques with names.
HISTORY: The war memorial was commissioned by the parish of Bramshott and dedicated by Sergeant Major FH Dale in November 1920, to honour the men of the parish dead in the First World War. The cross was subsequently also dedicated to Bramshott men dead in the Second World War and other conflicts.

Harry Inigo Triggs (1876-1923) designed a number of buildings in the Hampshire and Surrey area, including other war memorials. He published a number of books on architecture and garden design and was influential, along with Harold Peto, in the revival of the Italian Renaissance style in gardens of the English Arts and Crafts movement.
SUMMARY OF IMPORTANCE: War memorials have very strong historic and cultural significance, on both a local and national scale. This elegant cross by a noted architect and garden designer also has group value with the nearby listed church and listed tombs in the churchyard.
