Description

The war memorial stands in the churchyard of St Mary the Virgin church. It was dedicated in 1920, designed by Harry Inigo Triggs, and constructed by Messrs Moon of Haslemere and Messrs Caesar of Liphook, stonemasons. The memorial is built of Doulton Stone and comprises a tall, tapering square shaft set upon a moulded octagonal base, surmounted by a cross fleury. The shaft rests on a pedestal with three square projections, each with moulded tops and bases, standing on a circular platform of Bargate Stone. Inscribed on the western elevation of the plinth is the text 'To the glory of God and the honoured memory of Bramshott men who gave their lives in the Great Wars 1914-1919 1939-1945 and other conflicts'. The three plinth projections bear plaques inscribed with names. The moulded base of the shaft is inscribed 'In hoc signo'. The memorial was commissioned by the parish of Bramshott and dedicated in November 1920 to honour those who died in the First World War; the cross was later dedicated to those lost in the Second World War and subsequent conflicts. Harry Inigo Triggs, influential in the revival of the Italian Renaissance style within the Arts and Crafts movement, designed a number of buildings and other war memorials in the Hampshire and Surrey area. The memorial has strong historic and cultural significance and also exhibits group value with the nearby listed church and listed tombs in the churchyard.
