Description

This building began as a 17th-century timber-framed house, significantly altered and expanded over the centuries, and now comprises three dwellings. A school building was added to the west in the mid-19th century (1831), followed by an eastward extension around 1900. Later restoration and modifications occurred in the late 20th century. The walls are primarily of rubble sandstone, with some brick dressings, painted brickwork, render, and tile-hanging. The roof is tiled.

The south facade demonstrates the building's phased development. The western school building has a tall, symmetrical, single-storey front with a projected central bay, originally featuring a 1-1-1 window arrangement, later modified with the insertion of dormers. The window openings have chamfered reveals and Gothic hoodmoulds, along with a small opening in the gable, which has kneelers, and now contains 20th-century casement windows. The central section is one storey and attic (two storeys on the east side) with four windows, three Gothic hoodmoulds (one above a former doorway), and casement windows. The eastern end is two storeys with projections at the front (circa 1900) and rear (mid-19th century), with mostly tile-hung first floors and casement windows. All doorways are 20th-century replacements. A plaque in the west gable of the school building is inscribed "1843". A section of the north wall in the middle section reveals original timber framing. The central section was formerly known as the Bell Inn.
