Description
The milestone opposite West Down Lodge on Portsmouth Road is a Grade II listed structure, likely dating from the early to mid-19th century. This milestone is made of Portland stone and is set diagonally, featuring a rounded corner that transitions into a quadrant curve. The base has a chamfer that stops into the angle. The inscriptions on the milestone include "HYDE PARK CORNER" on the quadrant, "40" on the chamfer, "GODALMING 8 MILES" along with a benchmark on the west face of the angle, and "LIPHOOK 4 MILES" on the east side. Notably, George Bernard Shaw referenced this milestone in his letters while he was living at Blencathra.
