Description

PORTSMOUTH ROAD 1. 5393 (North Side) Hindhead St Edmund's School, East End (Formerly Blencathra) SU 83 NE 7/158 II 2. Tall, irregular late C19 house. Entrance front of 2 storeys and attic, 3 bays. Dark red brick with stone bands and dressings and bright red brick relieving arches. Some parts half-timbered with plaster filling, other parts tile hung: a mixture of traditional English motifs. High pitched tiled roofs with fancy ridge tiles and tall brick chimneys. Rather small double wood porch. Garden front similar and with wood loggia before recessed central bay. Included only for its connection with George Bernard Shaw who moved there immediately after his honeymoon, found the house to his liking and there wrote "Caesar and Cleopatra".
