Description
St Edmund's School, East End, is a tall and irregular late 19th-century house, originally known as Blencathra. The entrance front features two storeys and an attic with three bays. It is constructed of dark red brick, accented with stone bands and dressings, and has bright red brick relieving arches. Some sections of the building are half-timbered with plaster filling, while others are tile hung, showcasing a blend of traditional English architectural styles. The high-pitched tiled roofs are adorned with decorative ridge tiles and tall brick chimneys. The entrance includes a rather small double wood porch. The garden front mirrors the entrance and features a wood loggia in front of the recessed central bay. The building is noted for its connection to George Bernard Shaw, who moved there right after his honeymoon, found the house appealing, and wrote "Caesar and Cleopatra" during his time there.
