Description
Holme Grange School is a large house that has been converted into a private school. It was built in 1883 by R. Norman Shaw in the Tudor vernacular style. The building is constructed of brick, with the upper floor being tile hung and a tiled roof featuring several gables and moulded bargeboards. It has an irregular plan and stands two storeys high, with several large brick chimneys that have offset heads and some with fluted shafts. The windows are a mix of mullion and mullion and transom types, all with leaded lights.
The entrance front features a central porch with a four-centred gothic arch and a large mullion and transom window above it. To the right of the porch are two oversailing gables. On the left side of the porch, there are two four-light windows that break the eaves and have small hipped roofs, while at right angles to these are two gables of unequal pitch.
The garden front is irregular, with the main feature being a large projecting chimney stack that has ribs and crow stepped, coped sides above the eaves level. To the left of this chimney stack is a two-storey canted bay window with a hipped roof. To the right of the chimney, and at right angles, is a large mullion and transom window, with gables recessed to the right of this window. There is also a gravelled terrace adjoining this front, which has a brick retaining wall, a central flight of six brick steps, and small piers leading down to wide lawns.
