Description

Hammerwood, built in 1872, was designed by Norman Shaw as a village school and schoolmaster's house. It is an L-shaped building with two storeys and three windows. The ground floor is constructed of red brick with a diaper pattern created by grey brick headers, while the first floor is tile-hung. The roof is tiled, with three dormers, one gabled and two hipped. A tall chimney breast is situated in the angle of the L shape. A gabled porch provides entry. The east wall of the east wing, which originally served as the school, features a tall, pointed Gothic window.
