Description

This lychgate and attached churchyard wall were built in 1879 by the architect E P Loftus Brock. The design echoes the Decorated Gothic style of the nearby Church of St Stephen (designated Grade II*), and was commissioned for Oswald Augustus Smith of Hammerwood Park (designated Grade I).

The lychgate is constructed of rock-faced sandstone, timber framing, and has a tiled roof with wooden gates secured by iron hinges. The churchyard walls are also of rock-faced sandstone. The lychgate is square and connects to a curved section of the churchyard wall on the north side, with the remaining three sides being straight.

The lychgate has a rock-faced stone base with diagonal stone coping, accessed by two stone steps on the north side. Above the base is a timber-framed structure with open sides, supporting a gabled tiled roof. Curved braces supporting a tie beam dated 1879 connect the north and south sides, along with three posts ornamented with arched detailing. Stone piers also feature curved braces attached to the corner posts. The gables are finished with plain barge-boards and carved pendants. Wooden gates with carved quadrant patterns and ornamental hinges are attached to the base on the north side. The churchyard wall is low, constructed of rock-faced stone with smooth diagonal stone coping, and has a curved section facing the road on the north side, becoming straight towards the corners and on the remaining three sides.
