Description

Claremont School, built between 1878 and 1879 by architect R. Norman Shaw, is designed in the Tudor style. The building is constructed of red brick with tile-hanging and features gables. It has two and three storeys and is topped with tall red brick chimney stacks.

The entrance front has a porch that is off-centre to the right, featuring a gable and two upper floors that are timber-framed. The doorway has a three-centred depressed arch and a panelled door. To the left of the porch, there is a two-storeyed block with mullioned windows, including both mullioned and transomed designs. The upper floor has tile-hung gabled dormers. There is also a block at right angles with a tile-hung upper floor.

To the right of the porch, a one-storeyed billiard room features a six-light mullioned window made of stone and has battlements. A Tudor gateway to the right leads to the garden. The garden front is highlighted by a tall chimney stack with ribbed detailing and a stepped gable. To the left, there is a two-storeyed bay window, and further left is a block with a tile-hung first floor. A large modern wing has been added to the north.
