Description
The Lady Mary Montgomerie Monument, built around 1855, is a memorial located in Beauport Park, Hastings. It is constructed from ashlar stone and render, with some repairs made using block work and brick.
The monument features a circular neoclassical design with a drum-like base made of ashlar walling, standing approximately 2.5 meters high and topped with a coping course that is missing in some areas. The entrance is round-headed and includes a 20th-century wrought-iron gate. Inside the drum, there is a blocked entrance to a vault. The interior is designed with stone steps that lead up to a tempietto arrangement of six Ionic columns, which support a classical entablature. The frieze and dentil cornice bear the inscription 'A TRIBUTE OF AFFECTION AND GRATITUDE TO LADY MARY MONTGOMERIE 1855', and this is topped by a dome. Under the dome, there is a later life-sized sculpture of a young woman on a circular concrete base.
