Description
Hindhead House, formerly known as Tyndalls, is a 2-storey house with attics built in 1884. It is located on Hindhead Road in Hindhead, Surrey. The house was constructed by Professor John Tyndall, a notable figure who lived here until his death in 1893. He was instrumental in attracting academic and literary individuals to the area, who built villas on its healthy slopes.
The building features an irregular design with two wide bays on the entrance front, including an enclosed projecting porch on the left. It is made of red brick with brighter red brick dressings, which include flat or slightly cambered gauged window arches. The first floor is tile hung with fishscale bands, and the roof is covered with red tiles, featuring overhanging eaves and gable ends. On the garden side, there is a large, 2-storey, half-octagon projection with a top balcony and two additional windows. A tall central chimney stack adds to the architectural interest. The property is now owned by the local authority and has been converted into flats.
