Description

The Cross on Gibbet Hill is a Celtic cross erected in 1851 by Sir William Erle, who was the Chief Justice of the Common Pleas. This cross was built after the original Gibbet stone had been removed. It is made of Cornish granite and stands on a conglomerate base. The shaft tapers to a height of approximately 8 feet and features a round cross at the top. There is scroll carving on the front of the base, which includes the inscriptions: "POST TENEBRAS LUX," "POST OBITUM SAWS," "IN OBITU PAX," and "IN LUC SPEC."
