Description
The Royal Naval School Main Building, formerly known as Stoatley Hall, is a romantic country house dating from 1902, as indicated by a plaque above the porch. It features elaborate medieval and Tudor-style details. The entrance front has a shallow V-shape and is irregular, with a large central porch projection and a canted bay projection on the right. The building is two storeys high on the left and centre, with one tall storey on the right. It has a tiled roof with tall brick chimneys and is constructed from courses of rubble masonry, with freestone quoins and dressings that include window mullions and transoms.
In the right "hall" section, the lights have cusped heads, and there is a continuous drip mould adorned with grotesque bird and animal carvings. Diagonal buttresses flank the four-centred porch entrance, which has a peaked parapet above. The porch itself is rib-vaulted with brick panels.
Inside, there is a quasi-17th century staircase featuring thick balusters. The building also includes a panelled hall with an Ionic screen and an upper gallery that has a coved soffit. Two notable chimney-pieces are decorated with glazed tiles.
