Description

Tankerdale Farmhouse is a house that dates from the early and late 16th century, the 17th century, and the early 19th century, with some 20th-century alterations. The building features varied walls; the north-west gable, the north-east elevation, and the staircase wing show exposed bricknogged timber-frame construction, with close-studding partly infilled with ironstone. The lower walls on the other two sides are roughcast, sitting on a plinth, while the upper walls are tile-hung with scalloped bands. A large tapered stack made of stone and brick is attached to the gable. The roof is tiled, gabled, and half-hipped, with a shafted middle stack.

The farmhouse is a three-bay lobby-entrance framed building, two storeys high with an attic, and the south-west front has three windows. The casements are present, and the front features four large sash windows, along with remains of diagonal oak mullions. There is a six-panelled door set in a plain frame, topped with a moulded canopy supported by carved brackets.

Inside, there are two massive chimney bressummers, one of which is hidden, and a Tudor-arched fireplace made of brickwork with a chamfer. The original winding staircase has moulded mullions for the small casements, some of which are filled. The main floor beams are also moulded, and a small area of exposed purlin bears the inscription M.E 1711.
