Description

Adhurst St Mary is a mansion, dating from 1858 and designed by P. C. Hardwick in a plain French Renaissance style. It has been converted into flats. The building is constructed of polygonal sandstone with Bath stone dressings, including finials and kneelers. A band of weathering runs along the first floor, and a plinth is present at the base. The steeply pitched slate roof is punctuated by prominent chimneys with moulded caps and bases, each chamfered at the corners. The two-storey and attic building features gables with full dormers and projecting features, two of which are associated with attached stacks. Windows are irregular in pattern and vary between two and three lights, incorporating mullions and mullions with transoms. A splayed bay window on the first floor has a stone roof and moulded base resting on an attached column. A Tudor arch forms the entrance porch, featuring a hoodmould topped with a cartouche displaying the date 1858. Lower, varied service wings extend from the south-east side of the main building.
