Description
This is a farm outbuilding, formerly a cowhouse, located to the west of Lower Green Farmhouse. It dates from the late 18th century and has undergone minor alterations in the 20th century. The building is constructed of coursed squared rubble sandstone with ashlar dressings, quoins, plain gables, and a Staffordshire blue tiled roof. It is a single-storey structure with overlofts and features a rear lean-to offshoot on the west side, which includes a small loft accessed by a stone stair against the west gable.
The outbuilding consists of three bays, each with quoined doorways: two at either end for animals and one off-centre for feed passage. The doors are vertically boarded and split. There are also two overloft taking-in doors, one at the east end with a quoined surround and the other with a flush stone frame. A wide lean-to is present against the east gable, and there is a shallow offshoot to the rear at the west end, leading onto rising ground. The loft door has been converted into a window in the centre bay at the rear.
Inside, the building features a double purlin roof supported by 18th-century roof trusses. This little-altered late 18th-century farm building is an important part of the farm group, complementing the contemporary farmhouse, and is listed for its group value.
