Description
The Church of St. John Baptist, located in Upper Elkstone, is a Grade II* listed building dated 1786. It is constructed from coursed and squared rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings, topped with a clay tile roof featuring coped verges on kneelers. The church has an oblong plan, with the nave and chancel combined. It features round-headed windows with raised key-stones, top-opening glazing bar windows, a single large window to the right, and two smaller windows to the left, one above the other, with the upper window illuminating a gallery. The central entrance is a round-headed board door with a datestone above, and there is a Venetian window on the east side. At the west end, there is a squat louvred belfry topped with a pyramidal roof.
Inside, the church contains a late 18th-century double-decker pulpit, box pews, a vestry screen, an altar rail, and a west gallery with a balustraded rail. A plaque on the east wall notes that the chapel was built under the care of William Grindon of Stonfold, who completed the construction in 1788 with a total of two hundred pounds, of which one hundred and forty was collected by a Brief and the remainder by a levy throughout the township. Additional interior features include a Ten Commandment board on the north wall, a Creed board and Lord's Prayer board above the east window, and the coat of arms of George III above the altar.
