Description

The Church of St. Bartholomew is a parish church built between 1871 and 1873 by architect Ewan Christian, with a west spire added in 1879 by Sugden. The church is constructed from squared and coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and features clay tile roofs with coped verges. It has a two-bay chancel and a three-bay nave that includes a south porch, a north aisle, and a west tower topped with a stone spire, all designed in a style reminiscent of the late 13th century. The north aisle has two gables, and the west tower consists of three stages, featuring an offset plinth, a belfry band, a moulded parapet band, a crenellated parapet with crocheted corner pinnacles, and gabled openings leading to the spire.

Inside, the church has a north arcade supported by cylindrical columns, a pointed chancel arch that springs from moulded corbels, and a pointed lower arch. The nave roof is supported by scissor braces, while the chancel roof is boarded. Notable fittings include an octagonal sandstone font dating from around 1300 and 17th-century oak chairs located in the west tower and chancel. There is also a wooden plaque in the nave that commemorates Mrs. Ruth Stubs, who bequeathed funds for the curate and the poor of Butterton in her will from 1775.
